About Maureen

Vision:

Maureen is inspired to create art that promotes the inner journey.

Background:

Zimbabwe born artist Maureen Edgcumbe completed her Graphic Design diploma at the Natal Technikon in 1977. After her experience in the commercial world she was inspired to study the holistic fields of Kinesiology and Personal Coaching which had a profound effect on her artistic style and expression In her student days South African artist Andrew Verster tutored her in figure study. Thereafter and years later she developed her signature style in oils on figure, portrait and landscapes. In 2002 she won the Arts Interactive Portrait prize.

Landscape: 

Maureen initially developed a name for herself as a landscape artist. She sold her work through various galleries in South Africa. She was originally tutored in landscape painting by South African landscape artist Anton Benson. Maureen brings together four elements of her experience in her work - her backgrounds as graphic designer, landscape artist, holistic coach and African wilderness journeys.

Retro Portrait:

Maureen's  recent figure paintings are inspired by the history of early theatre and black and white photography. She interprets this reference in a colourful and contemporary style.

Corporate Work:

Maureen's  works is in the collections of several corporates including major donors to The Wildlands Conservation Trust such as Unilever, Rand Merchant Bank and several others.   Her work is also in displayed in boardrooms at Kruger National Park (Phalaborwa) and  SAAMBR at Ushaka Marine World and at Moores Rowland, Makaranaga Lodge. and Natal Portland Cement.

African Ethnic:

Maureen is a visual narrator who sees her ethnic paintings as windows into rural Africa and it's landscapes. She mainly depicts the atmosphere of the natural world with emphasis on the drama of light and reflection at  the change of day.
